Dr. Shay started providing consulting services during his junior year as an undergraduate student at Babson College. Over the years the projects have grown in size and scope. His consulting focuses primarily on the following areas:

  • Developing business plans to raise startup or growth capital
  • Strategic plans
  • Leader development
  • Organizational change and transition

Here is a brief sample of his consulting work:

TerraEchos, Missoula, Montana (2011-2012)

Worked with founder to refocus business strategy and then wrote business plan that ultimately led to raising $1.7 million in venture capital. TerraEchos security product and solution provider offering enhanced security for high-value commercial and government targets through real time data sensor analytics. 

Bank of Montana (2005-2007)

Developed this de novo bank’s business plan. Reviewers with 30+ years of experience commented that it was the best plan they’d seen in their career. Bank continues to be rated as one of the best in the region.

Benchmark Simulations (2005-2007)

Assisted company in developing and executing plan to secure Small Business and Innovative Research Phase I and Phase II Grants from the US government. This allowed founder to maintain strong equity position. Company was acquired shortly thereafter.

Watson Children’s Shelter (2005-2009)

Worked pro-bono with Executive Director to write business plan for expanding from one to two shelters. Successfully assisted in raising $4.5 million.

Blue Cross/Blue Shield Montana (2005)

Wrote strategic plan for expanding subsidiary (Western States Insurance Agency) from 18 offices to over 50 within 5 years.

Inland Northwest Space Alliance (2004-2005)

Led a team to develop business plan for the commercialization of NASA and Department of Defense technologies including the Free Flyer (homeland security unmanned aerial vehicle) and LifeGuard (Mars Mission biomedical device) projects.  Part of a $3.4 million grant.

Big Sky Brewing Company (2001)

Developed business plan to secure government enhanced loans of $3.4 million to expand business into its own bottling facility.  Brewery is now #1 in Montana and a leading regional brewery.

Montana World Trade Center (1999-2007)

Developed and reviewed business and marketing plans for businesses in the Northwest region of the United States. Developed the rockymountainbusiness.com website to provide rural businesses with access to information on entrepreneurship, strategy, and international business.

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts (1999)

Developed executive education program for 200 senior level Four Seasons’ managers from around the world.
