Overview
Dr. Shay brings a wealth of case teaching and writing experience to his workshops. In addition to winning several awards while teaching case-based courses, he has developed and published leading cases in his fields. His experience and success has led to numerous invitations to provide case teaching and writing presentations at conferences and institutions. In the past year he has taught workshops for the Malaysia Productivity Corporation and UNIRAZAK Case Writer’s Club (attracting 150 participants from throughout Malaysia and southeast Asia), the Association of Asia-Pacific Business Schools (held at KAIST in Seoul, Korea), and the Latin American Case Association.
He is a past President of the North American Case Research Association, a member of the Case Research Journal’s Editorial Board, and past President of the Western Academy of Management. Dr. Shay’s research has been published in the Case Research Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of International Management, International Journal of Cross-cultural Management, and several other leading journals.
Case Workshops
Dr. Shay’s case workshops can focus on case teaching, case research, or both and are delivered in a lively, engaging environment.
In terms of teaching, participants learn how to:
- Design a course using case studies
- Prepare for case discussions
- Lead case discussions
- Tips, tricks, and tactics for enhancing the case experience
- Observe a master case teacher to maximize the experience
The goal for the teaching workshop is to provide participants with the foundation and tools necessary to significantly improve the learning environments and opportunities that professors provide their students. This is achieved in an interactive, engaging workshop setting.
In terms of case research, participants learn how to:
- Recognize and evaluate opportunities for case research
- Effectively develop a plan for a case research project
- Assess and address the practical and ethical dilemmas involved in case research
- Write effective opening paragraphs and the first draft of the case
- Write effective Instructor’s Manuals/Teaching Notes
- Move a case through the review process and ultimately get published
The goal for the research workshop is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to write high quality cases that can be used in the classroom and submitted for publication. Throughout the workshop, participants engage with Dr. Shay and other participants in interactive exercises designed to begin developing the framework for an executable case research project.
